Gilberto Ramon Silva Menendez
Our kindness project in honor of Gilberto Ramon Silva Menendez was incredibly special! We visited Orlando Fire Department's Fire Station #5, which is right across the street from Pulse. As you can imagine, the station's firefighters went above and beyond to offer shelter, comfort and treatment that terrible night.
To thank them for what one crew member called "our finest hour," we brought a big jar of chocolate chip cookies that Brock made and a colorful "thank you" banner courtesy of Molly. Orlando Sentinel reporter Kate Santich and photographer Joe Burbank came along to watch the kids in action, then created this story.
After we shared our treats and talked to the firefighters about their jobs, they let the kids climb up into the truck, listen to the dispatch headphones and even practice using their fire hoses. (They aimed for our van, which needed a wash!) Molly declared this the best project we've done so far.
We are humbled by the kind words and encouragement so many of you have shared since the story ran. Now that school has begun, our kindness projects may happen a bit more gradually ... but we won't give up. Kindness matters! #49for49
